چکیده

We present the current status of PHOENIX model atmospheres for dwarfs of the spectral type T, typical for older field brown dwarfs and low-mass brown dwarfs. The results are based on new predictions of the CH4 line opacities from theoretical calculations with the STDS software package, extrapolating to transitions from rotational levels up to J = 40. While individual line positions and strengths are reproduced with moderate to fair accuracy, the cumulative band strength in the region of the IR methane bands is modelled much better thanks to the inclusion of large numbers of faint lines relevant at high temperatures.

Non-Ideal Equation of State, Refraction and Opacities in Very Cool, Helium-Rich White Dwarf Atmospheres

The atmospheres of cool, helium-rich white dwarfs constitute an exotic and poorly explored physical regime of stellar atmospheres. Under physical conditions where the temperature varies from 1000K to 10000K, the density can reach values as large as 2 g/cm, and the pressure is as high as 1 Mbar, the atmosphere is no longer an ideal gas and must be treated as a dense fluid. Helium atoms become st...

Spectrum of hot methane in astronomical objects using a comprehensive computed line list.

Hot methane spectra are important in environments ranging from flames to the atmospheres of cool stars and exoplanets. A new spectroscopic line list, 10to10, for (12)CH4 containing almost 10 billion transitions is presented. This comprehensive line list covers a broad spectroscopic range and is applicable for temperatures up to 1,500 K. Previous methane data are incomplete, leading to underesti...

M ay 2 00 1 The Limiting Effects of Dust in Brown Dwarf Model Atmospheres

We present opacity sampling model atmospheres, synthetic spectra and colors for brown dwarfs and very low mass stars in two limiting case of dust grain formation: 1) inefficient gravitational settling i.e. the dust is distributed according to the chemical equilibrium predictions, 2) efficient gravitational settling i.e. the dust forms and depletes refractory elements from the gas, but their opa...

In this paper, we calculate new line lists and opacities for the 12 bands of the AΣ – XΣ transitions of the CrH molecule. Identified in objects of the new L dwarf spectroscopic class (many of which are brown dwarfs), as well as in sunspots, the CrH molecule plays an important role in the diagnosis of lowtemperature atmospheres. As a tentative first application of these opacities, we employ our ...

Atomic and Molecular Opacities for Brown Dwarf and Giant Planet Atmospheres

We present a comprehensive description of the theory and practice of opacity calculations from the infrared to the ultraviolet needed to generate models of the atmospheres of brown dwarfs and extrasolar giant planets. Methods for using existing line lists and spectroscopic databases in disparate formats are presented and plots of the resulting absorptive opacities versus wavelength for the most...
